Shirley is 72. She suffered a stroke which has affected her muscle control and now finds it hard to walk. When she came out of hospital she could only walk 50 – 70 yards.

Her doctor challenged her to increase her walking distance each day. She lives in an estate where each house has a drive leading down to the road. She started by working out how far she could walk and get back, which was to the first house’s drive. She walked this distance twice a day until she felt strong enough to go further. She increases by one driveway every couple of weeks.

“At first I was worried about all the neighbours watching me and seeing my problems, but they actually all stop and talk to me. I see a lot more of them that I used to. They encourage me, I’m quite the local celebrity.”

One year on Shirley can walk 200 yards, and is confident of increasing that.
