Joy has controlled rheumatoid arthritis and has recently been diagnosed with early osteoarthritis in her knees and back. She is overweight (weighing 138 Kg) and can only walk 50- 100 metres.
She has agreed to try a slimming world diet and take a daily short walk, of 100m. She has also been referred to a physiotherapist for muscle strengthening exercises and aqua therapy.
Over the first 6 weeks she only lost 1Kg, but she has been walking daily. She is very sedentary and so isn’t expecting fast weight loss.
“I know it isn’t going to be easy, but I really want to change. I need to be able to walk further so I can start to lose some more weight. I know the rheumatoid arthritis isn’t my fault, but I feel as if I am responsible for the osteoarthritis. That’s a terrible thought.”
We’ll be following Joy’s story as it unfolds and will update the website over the following months.
